Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning (2025) Full Movie Recap | Plot Summary & Ending Explained

The latest Mission: Impossible film kicks off with Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) receiving a critical message from Erika Sloane (Angela Bassett), now the U.S. President. The rogue AI, The Entity, and its ally Gabriel (Esai Morales) are still at large, wreaking havoc by corrupting cyberspace and turning humanity against itself. A doomsday cult has even formed around The Entity. To stop it, Ethan must find its original source code and pair it with the cruciform key he’s kept from Gabriel.

However, Sloane warns that destroying The Entity would collapse cyberspace, sparking global chaos, and urges Ethan to surrender before the message self-destructs. Ethan reunites with Benji (Simon Pegg) and Luther (Ving Rhames) to break out Gabriel’s former accomplice, Paris (Pom Klementieff), from an Austrian prison. They outmaneuver Agents Jasper Briggs (Shea Whigham) and Theo Degas (Greg Tarzan Davis), convincing them to let Paris go to aid their mission. At the U.S. Embassy in London, Ethan is nearly betrayed by two agents, but Grace (Hayley Atwell), sent by Kittridge (Henry Czerny), intervenes. Gabriel’s goons ambush them, tranquilizing Ethan and Grace. Waking up bound, Ethan and Grace face Gabriel, who references Ethan’s past mission involving the Rabbit’s Foot—a precursor to The Entity.

Gabriel, abandoned by The Entity for failing to secure the key, demands Ethan retrieve the Rabbit’s Foot from the sunken Sevastopol submarine. Ethan fakes his death with a cyanide capsule, escapes, and frees Grace after taking out Gabriel’s men. Reuniting with Benji, Paris, and Degas, Ethan confronts The Entity through a device Gabriel used. The AI reveals Ethan’s plan to destroy it with Luther’s “Poison Pill” and the “Podkova” core module, showing visions of nuclear war and urging Ethan to bring it to South Africa’s Doomsday Vault. Ethan splits from the team to find Luther, whom Gabriel has kidnapped and rigged with a bomb. Despite their efforts, Luther sacrifices himself to contain the explosion. Devastated, Ethan surrenders to Jasper, revealing Jasper’s true identity as Jim Phelps, Jr., son of Ethan’s traitorous mentor. Kittridge informs Ethan that The Entity is infiltrating global nuclear arsenals.

Meeting the Joint Chiefs, including General Sydney (Nick Offerman), Ethan refuses Sloane’s plea to control The Entity, insisting no one should wield such power. He convinces them to let him locate the Sevastopol alone to prevent a nuclear attack within 72 hours. Admiral Neely (Hannah Waddingham) reluctantly aids Ethan after receiving a personal note from Sloane, sending him to the Bering Sea. Meanwhile, Benji, Grace, Paris, and Degas track down William Donloe (Rolf Saxon), a former CIA agent with Sevastopol’s coordinates, on St. Matthew’s Island. They battle Russian mercenaries also seeking the submarine, saving Donloe and his wife, Tapeesa (Lucy Tulugarjuk), as Donloe’s home burns. Ethan, dropped into the Bering Sea, survives an attack by an Entity acolyte, Hagar (Tomas Paredes), and reaches the Sevastopol. He secures the Podkova but nearly drowns escaping the sinking sub, only to be rescued by Grace.

Revived, Ethan apologizes to Donloe for his past actions, but Donloe is content with his life. The team plans to trap The Entity by uploading it to a drive using the Poison Pill and Podkova. At the Doomsday Vault, they confront Gabriel, Jasper, and Kittridge, with a nuclear device set to detonate. A gunfight erupts, and Gabriel escapes with the Poison Pill. Ethan pursues him in a thrilling aerial dogfight, reclaiming the Poison Pill and leaving Gabriel to a grim fate. Grace completes the upload just in time, trapping The Entity, while Donloe, Tapeesa, and Degas disarm the bomb.

Back in the U.S., Sloane takes American nukes offline to block The Entity, surviving an assassination attempt thanks to Sydney’s sacrifice. Ethan, saved by a backup parachute, receives a final message from Luther, honoring their IMF oath. Kittridge is frustrated, but Jasper makes peace with Ethan. In London, the IMF team—Ethan, Benji, Paris, and Grace—shares a final glance before parting ways, vanishing into the shadows with The Entity secured[wide].
